if we are to be charged for our waste disposal then why can't unrecyclible waste be offset against what we recyle!! surely this would encourage all to recycle more, and may be the larger companies may take this on board and produce less packaging

Hi Walter, the organic stuff causes no problems if composted properly but as the system is at the moment it causes huge problems. When mixed with household waste and disposed of in landfill the methane emissions as it breaks down are huge.

This waste is a lot easier for councils to deal with and is in some well organised areas retailed as soil conditioners, bark chips and other gardening products which all goes to reducing the overall financial and enviromental burden.

There needs to be more pressure on both the manufacturing companies and the retailers ( as well as local councils)who use the end plastic products. As yet there are few facilities to recycle plastic and to many varieties of plastic to be efficiently recycled.

Deal with what can be delt with easily now and work on lasting solutions to the more tricky problems.
Thinks like as your light bulbs blow replace with lo energy long life ones, stop using plasic bags ( everyone can do this quite easily and the impact would be huge). Recycle what you can and try to be more selective about what you buy in the first place.

Small steps maybe but ones that are worth taking.

Recycle North East is an online exchange, designed for items such as reusable building materials, business by-products and household items. The objective of the site is to facilitate the recycling and repurposing of materials that would otherwise be disposed of in landfill, as well as encouraging a vital environmental ethic within the North East of England.

You can post listings of items and materials you wish to dispose of or browse for those currently available in your area. Each listing contains a description of the materials available along with a name and contact telephone number (available when you register with the site). The actual exchange transactions are carried out directly between the interested parties.

What a fantastic idea!!!

After a very big drive to get all households in this County to recycle household waste…guess what..

The price the authorities where getting..selling paper to China (and shipping it there) has dropped from £70 a ton..to £15.

Result….piles of paper sitting in landfill.

The bottles and plastic have been going to landfill anyway…I know the lorry driver who takes our areas waste there..!

This was NEVER an excercise in “green” recycling…it was a scam to make money.

If ALL Counties in the UK built plasma furnaces (as in Hampshire)…they would be able to safely get rid off virtually ALL waste…AND produce electricity.

IF they really wished to recycle…then,of course, they could build paper processing plants to do so..

These plants however..do create toxic waste of their own.

A little honesty from everyone would at least allow a genuine answer to be found..and more importantly allow people to trust their local authorities/government…but I am not holding my breath.

The problem is is that people keep buying the mass produced overly packaged crap from huge conglomerate companies rather than using local small homegrown stores who do use brown paper bags and offer recycling for their food because its cheaper and insist on buying plastic rubbish for their children to fill their christmas light emblazened houses!! Unfortunatley we are ruled by our wallets and people need to feed their families cheaply and quickly so they in turn feed the companies which keep producing stuff in too much packaging because we buy it…..It is society which is perpetuating it…

I think that good packing and presentation is an essential part of the advanced civilization in which we live.The idea that we should all go back to paper bags is a load of $%^&.The fact is we are all being brainwashed into thinking “GREEN”,the real reason is that our political idiots agreed to a Common Market dictat whereby we are fined if we exceed their landfill quotas,plus the desire for local councils to raise our rates and simultaneously reduce the services….The time is well overdue for the start of a public rebellion against these attempts to seriously degrade our hard fought standards of living.

Computer Recycling – Switch To Environmental Friendly Mode

Computer recycling refers to the practice of salvaging useable components from obsolete electronic devices or safely disposing off electronic devices. It is a practice that each one of us must inculcate because inappropriate handling of discarded computers and other electronic devices can cause environmental hazards.

Studies estimate that over 40 million electronic pieces become obsolete annually. These pieces have constituents such as lead, cadmium, barium, and mercury, which are hazardous to the environment. In a landfill, these materials seep into the ground and then into our food and water supplies. This can cause serious health concerns over a long period.

Obsolete Computers: Environmental Threats
Obsolete computers that are simply dumped in the garbage drums are the biggest threat to the environment. The computer monitors have cathode ray tubes containing four to five pounds of lead that contaminates the environment acutely. Besides lead, the computers have many other hazardous elements such as mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium. When inhaled over a long period, these elements cause high blood pressure, liver and nerve disease, blood with poor iron, and even brain damage to the exposed group. This causes great concern, considering several million computers become obsolete annually.

Therefore, we must handle the obsolete electronic devices carefully. Moreover, different Environmental Laws have banned the illegal landfills by the disposals of computers and other electronic equipment. These laws necessitate sending the un-functional computers to a reputable recycler for harmless recycling. The laws also specify the need for regular recycling to avoid such computers from piling up.

There are several methods to deal with old computers. Some of them are as follows:

· Give It For Reuse: If your computer is in a decent condition, you can sell it to a company or an individual so that it can be used further, or simply donate it to someone needy.

· Trade It In: There are many computer dealers (e.g. HP) who offer trade-in promotions on computers and peripherals.

· Auction It: You can sell the computer on eBay or any other auction site. You can also organize a quick garage sale and see if any of your friends or neighbors wants the computer.

· Set up a Server: You can continue using the old computer as a server to store and share data.

· Salvage Some Parts: You can see which parts of your computers are in good working condition. You can salvage those parts and use them in your new computer.
