Lysosomes break down waste products in the cell and help excrete them from the cell itself (like taking out the trash). They also are involved in breaking down large molecules (starch or proteins, for example) that in their original form would be of no use to the cell, but once the enzymes in the lysosomes react with them they are broken down into something the cell can use (glucose, for example). Unwanted chemicals and cellular components are recycled by the lysosomes into something usable for the cell.
